PURPOSE: To obtain a container which is almost a prior configuration but wherein the base is thicker and biaxially oriented, and a new preform for forming such a container. CONSTITUTION: The wall thickness of a body portion 22 of a preform 12 is increased so as to increase the wall thickness of a base 48, the base 48 being oriented in the circumferential and axial directions and the stresses applied to a container 10 being reduced, thereby permitting the container 10 to be in the state of the high initial internal pressurization. A shoulder 44 and the body 22 of the preform 12 are biaxially oriented to form the container 10, thereby being induced crystallinity in these portions so as to enhance the thermal stability and the resistance to creep deformation.
