Underpass sidewalls with recesses - involves side faces of trapezoidal form to give illusion of distance

The tunnel of an underpass for motor vehicles has recesses (1, 3) formed in its side walls. These recesses have two vertical faces which meet on a vertical line to form a triangular horizontal cross-section. The floor of the recess slopes upwards in the inward direction whilst the ceiling of the recess slopes downwards in the inward direction. The vertical faces are thus of trapezoidal form. The trapezoidal faces give the illusion of distance to the drivers of vehicles using the underpass. The transition from the unrestricted vision when driving above ground is thus made less abrupt and reduces the risk of accident during the time required to become used to the different driving conditions.
