Double conical frustum coupler for synthetic optical fibres - exploits total internal reflection at internal surface of cone for bidirectional mixing pref. in near infrared

The coupler (K) is mfd. of polycarbonate or PMMA in the shape of two truncated cones joined coaxially at the smaller ends, leaving pref. circular larger ends (S1,S2) in parallel planes filled as completely as possible by the fibres. The slop (alpha) and length of each cone are chosen so that light entering each fibre from one end is distributed uniformly over the opposite end, for optical mixing in both directions. USE/ADVANTAGE - In e.g. motor vehicles or machine tool installations. Coupler is easily and reproducibly mfd. irrespective of lengths of fibres.
