PRODUCTION OF BETA-KETONITRILE

PURPOSE:To readily, industrially and advantageously obtain beta-ketonitriles from an inexpensive raw material under mild conditions by reacting diazoacetonitrile with an alkylaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of Lewis acid. CONSTITUTION:Diazoacetonitrile is reacted with an alkylaldehyde (e.g. propionic aldehyde) expressed by formula I (R is alkyl) in the presence of a catalytic amount of Lewis acid (especially preferably tin (II) chloride) to provide beta- ketonitriles (e.g. propionyl acetonitrile) expressed by formula II. beta-ketonitriles are useful as a producing raw material for medicines and pesticide.
