PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing methyl chloride from carbon tetrachloride and methanol in which local generation of high temperatures in a reactor is suppressed and removal of carbon monoxide can be carried out according to a simple process without generating a mixed gas of the methyl chloride which is difficult to separate and carbon dioxide. CONSTITUTION:The aforementioned method for producing methyl chloride is composed of (1) the first step for hydrolyzing carbon tetrachloride in the vapor phase by using a catalyst containing a halide and/or oxide of at least one element in groups IB, IIA, IIB, VIB, VIIB and VIII of the periodic table supported on active carbon and separating the resultant carbon dioxide and hydrogen chloride and (2) the second step for reacting the aforementioned hydrogen chloride with methanol and producing the methyl chloride. |
