PURPOSE: To obtain an eatable coating composition which prevents the transition of water originated from a coating composition to a core substance and can thereby prevent coated tablets from swelling followed by formation of crack. CONSTITUTION: This eatable coating composition includes (A) a core substance containing sorbitol, preferably a substance having the component and the composition shown in the table, (B) a primary coating layer containing zein on the surface of the core substance and (C) a sugarless secondary coating layer on the primary coating layer in proportions of preferably about 40-60wt.%, about 0.1-1.5wt.% and about 40-60wt.%, respectively, based on the eatable coating composition. The secondary coating layer contains preferably sorbitol, particularly (a) about 77-83wt.% of a sorbitol solution containing about 65-75wt.% of sorbitol, (b) about 9.5-12.5wt.% of crystalline sorbitol powder, (c) about 0.25-1.5wt.% of a film-forming agent and (d) about 0.1-5.0wt.% of a crystallization retardant.
