A modification of the process claimed in the parent Specification comprises maintaining impure phenol derived from cumene at an elevated temperature in the liquid phase, in the presence of metallic iron or iron compounds other than the halides, sulphates and phosphates and the iron-containing surface active earths, until substantially no a -hydroxy-ketonic compounds remain in the mixture and thereafter recovering purified phenol from the product. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously. Examples are furnished in which phenol containing hydroxy acetone is heated in the presence of mild steel, ferric acetate or ferric oxide or phenol containing impurities including iron is heated and the product is subjected to extractive distillation and fractionation.
