PURPOSE: To obtain a non-contact sensor to accurately detect a basis weight of the sheet. CONSTITUTION: To measure the thickness of the paper sheet 24 in a supply path, a non-contact type transmitted energy sensor 52 is used. This sensor 52 includes an energy radiation source and an energy detector and the output of the energy radiation source is proportional to the quantity of energy received by the energy detector. The signal output level of the detector is utilized in one model and a basis weight of paper in a detection area of the detector 62 is confirmed. Operation due to the flapping of an image printed on the paper and paper at the movement can be reduced or removed by using heuristic sampling technology. This paper basis weight measurement system is corrected by using an automatic correction routine utilizing the coefficient of the border. To optimize the quality of the image and the handling of the sheet and control finishing operation, this paper basis weight measurement is used and operation that the paper sheet 24 receives thereafter is controlled.
