PURPOSE:To heighten the stability at the time of operating a molten carbonate fuel cell, for example, to prevent the cell' s properties from lowering as time passes and eliminate unstability of the temperature at the time of start-up. CONSTITUTION:An anode 2 and a cathode 3 are so set as to sandwich an electrolyte layer 1 between them. The cathode 3 is made of a porous sintered body of nickel and the surface part including the voids of the porous sintered body is previously coated with a composite oxide layer containing magnesium, lithium, and nickel. The constant amount of heat is supplied to carry out heating until the carbonate as an electrolyte is melted completely at the temperature near the melting point of the carbonate and the temperature is going to rise, and after the temperature rising is detected, the temperature is increased to the cell operation temperature and the cell is operated. |
