Modified crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite catalyst and its use in the production of lubes of high viscosity index

The catalytic activity of a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a Constraint Index of from about 1 to about 12 for a variety of hydrocarbon conversions including the oligomerization of olefins to provide high viscosity index lubes is significantly enhanced by modifying the catalyst to reduce surface acid sites. This is accomplished by contacting the zeolite with a fluorosilicate salt to extract surface zeolitic aluminum which is replaced by silicon.
