Liquid, e.g. sugar juice containing impurities, is introduced at 30 to a deflection plate 32. Foam is directed by skimmers 44 into a canal 47. Heavy solids collect on a tray 48, are moved by scrapers 56 to a central sump 51 and are discharged at 52. Thickening pickets 58 are mounted on the scraper structure. Lighter solids settle on trays 60a to 60d and are scraped to the bottom of the tank, which itself constitutes a further tray having a sump 74, whence solids are removed at 85. Clarified liquid is removed by pipes 42, which communicate with a draw-off box 70.</p> |
