In a process for producing an element of reconstituted stone, a charge of material comprising stone powder, e.g. marble, and an unpolymerized mixture of thermosetting resins is cold-kneaded until a bound paste is obtained, the paste then being poured into a mould which is heated in a press until the resins are polymerized, whence the element is removed from the mould. In order to get coloured markings which give the finished element a more natural appearance, mixes of the colours are spread upon the base of the mould prior to the charging of the mix. In producing such an element the stone powders and resins may be first moulded on an auxiliary support placed above a mould, and then finished in the mould which may be of such a design as to mould tiles having tongues and grooves, or tenons and matrices so that individual tiles can ultimately be connected with one another. The moulds used for producing elements by the above process have movable walls to give different tile thicknesses, the walls being coated with a substance such as oil or wax to prevent the tile sticking thereto, and they may also be vented.</p> |
