In circular and linear accelerators, a device is used to micro-bunch particle bunches and thereby move the electromagnetic fields induced by the beam from a stability-threatening frequency domain to a domain with greatly reduced effects on the beam. The device consists of a tunable cavity resonator (1) which creates, either directly or combined with a generator (11), an accelerating field energized by the beam. By cascading identical devices (1), greater stability can be achieved. The method reduces the beams' power dispersion and emissivity, enhances brilliance, increases brightness, drives back the beam-beam limit, increases the power of free-electron lasers and monochromatizes them, and allows high millimetre wave peak power levels to be obtained.
