The invention relates to a method and device for extinguishing a burning oil well. The method consists in choking the flames by forcibly depriving them of any oxygen supply. According to one embodiment, the device consists of a conical extinguisher (10) of diameter (D) and height (H) which are determined as a function of the size of the well head (5), including, at its top, a lifting ring (11) and, at its base, guide devices (12).
