New anilino N-alkyl-N-phenylalkyl:aminomethyl:fluoran cpds. - used in copying and in new intermediate aminophenol and benzoyl:benzoic acid cpds.

1. New 2'-anilino-6' -(N-alkyl-N-phenethyl- and -N-phenylpropyl)-amino -3'-methyl-fluoran cpds. (I); 2. New 2-(4-(N-alkyl-N-phenethyl- and -N-(3-phenylpropyl) -amino-2-hydroxy)-benzoyl-benzoic acid cpds. (II); and 3. New N-phenethyl- and N-(3-phenylpropyl)-m-aminophenol cpds. (III) of the formulae: n = 2 or 3; R = lower alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) (mixts.) are claimed for use as leuco dyestuff in chromogenic copying or registering material. They are black chromogenic dyestuffs giving a colour image with greenish-black hue. (II) and (III) are intermediates in (I) synthesis. In an example thermographic paper was prepd. by coating paper with a 1:1 mixt. of suspension of 3.5 g dyestuff + 15.0 g clay and (2) 10.5 g bisphenol A + 8.9 g clay, both in a soln. of 15% aq. PVA soln. and 40.0 g water. The dyestuff has (A) 2-anilino-N-methyl-6-(N-ethyl-N-phenethyl) amino fluoran (IA) or (B) 1-anilino-3-methyl-6- (N-ethyl-N-benzyl)-amino-fluoran (control). When used forcopying at 50 deg.C, (A) gave a vivid greenish-black copy, with higher colour density than (B). The background colour was (A) 0.15, (B) 0.10 after 24 h conditioning at 150 deg.C/80% RH; and (A) 0.19, (B) 0.31 after 10 h exposure to sunlight.
