The sheet transfer mechanism has a shut support table (5). A group of endless belts (9) run in parallel over the table surface, but are askew to the direction of the sheet travel so that each sheet is pressed against a side guide and against a front edge guide (33). An oscillating pressure roller (32) cooperates with a transport roller (18), which is alternately accelerated and decelerated and delivers the sheets, one at a time, to a transfer drum (34). The latter is driven at a variable speed so that it receives each sheet from the transport roller at its lowest speed. It is then accelerated so that its speed matches that of the printing cylinder (4) at the instant of the sheet transfer.
