PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the subject 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid without using a large quantity of a metal catalyst and without deposition of an alkali metal salt of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by oxidizing 2,6- diisopropylnaphthalene. CONSTITUTION:2,6-Diisopropylnaphthalene or its oxidized intermediate is oxidized by molecular oxygen using a catalyst composed of a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a bromine compound in the presence of ammonia and/or an ammonium carboxylate in a fatty carboxylic acid solvent at about 200 deg.C to produce the objective 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid. The reaction product is cooled to room temperature and the resultant deposited solid matter is separated and washed to obtain 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid having >=97% purity in >=80% yield. |
