<p>A ferrule (910) for a surgical instrument (10) is disclosed. The ferrule is an integral plastic piece which shields a peripheral uncovered portion of a metal tube (15) of the surgical instrument which is intermediate a shrink wrap (20) covered portion of the metal tube (15) and an actuator housing which closely surrounds an extended portion of the metal tube (15). The ferrule (910) has first and second end portions and a middle portion with a cylindrical bore (930) in the first end, a first outwardly flaring frusto-conical bore (932) in the middle portion, and a second outwardly flaring frusto-conical bore in the second end. The second outwardly flaring frusto-conical bore (938) has a smaller inner diameter than the adjoining portion of the first frusto-conical bore (932) to provide an inwardly depending projection (936) which closely, matingly engages a peripheral channel (922) in the housing surrounding the extended portion of the metal tube (15).</p> |
