A process is described for the biological drying of sewage sludge by mechanical dehydration of the sewage sludge, aerobic microbial prefermentation and, over several weeks, aerobic afterfermentation, in which additives are added as conditioning agents to the batchwise and/or continuous drying of the sewage sludge of an optionally pretreated substrate from the pre and/or afterfermentation (returns) and the returns, which have been treated in this manner, are circulated together with fresh, untreated sewage sludge. The specific additives and/or mixtures of these additives used and their effect on the sewage sludge are also described.
