Prodn. of 2-aryl alcohols of formula (I) is effected by reacting an arene of formula (II) with an alkylene oxide of formula (III) in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (IV) and a tetraalkyl titanate (V) at -20 to +40 deg.C, opt. in a solvent: R1-R3=H, 1-20C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl, aryl, 7-12C aralkyl or 7-12C alkaryl, or two adjacent R1 gps. are linked to form a 5- or 6-membered ring; n=0-4. (II) is selected from indane, tetralin and their alkyl-substd. derivs. (IV) is AlCl3. (V) is a tetra(1-6C alkyl) titanate.
