Process in which a feedstream comprising 4-6C paraffins (e.g. light naphtha) substantially free of S cpds., oxygenates and water is catalytically isomerised to give a prod. of increased octane number includes pretreatment of the feedstream, which originally contains mercaptans, Cs2, COS, oxygenates and H2O, by (a) passing through a 1st adsorption zone comprising 13X zeolite at 25-100 deg.C, less than 3448 kPa (ga) and hourly space velocity 1-5; (b) then passing the effluent from (a) through a 2nd adsorption zone comprising activated Al2O3 at conditions as defined in (a); and (c) recovering an effluent contg. less than 1 wt. ppm. CS2, and pref. less than 1 wt. ppm S, oxygenates and H2O.
