A substantially pure, novel megakaryocyte amplifier protein which has a molecular weight of 25,000 +/- 8,000 and 28,000 +/- 2,000 as determined by gel filtration and SDS-PAGE, respectively, and an isoelectric point (pI) above 9 as determined by isoelectric chromatography, can be immunologically differentiated from human erythropoietin, interleukin-1 alpha , interleukin-1 beta , interleukin-6 and interleukin-7, does not have any megakaryocyte colony stimulating factor activity, and has an activity of activating megakaryocyte amplification. This protein can be produced by employing cell culture or genetic engineering techniques. It has activities of promoting megakaryocyte amplification and increasing the thrombocytes in the peripheral blood so that it can be utilized for the prevention and treatment of thrombocytopenia. |
