The method consists of using a laser beam focussed into the shape of a rectangle (13) whose width is approx. that of the surface to be treated, i.e. 1-3 mm. The beam passes over the surface with a power intensity of 5 x 10 power (4) to 1 x 10 power (5) w/cm2 at a speed of 2-6.5, pref. 4-4.5 cm/sec. The surface is preheated to 360-420, pref. 400 deg.C prior to laser melting where melting is carried out to a depth of 350 micron with a tolerance of 200 micron to allow for final grinding of the treated surface. USE/ADVANTAGE - Improving wear resistance of cam surfaces (12) in cam shafts of stroke combustion engines. Reduces the process time and thereby improves efficiency.
