Compounds of the general formula (I) (I) wherein X is sulphur or oxygen or a chemical bond; R1 is halogen, amino or azido; R2 is hydrogen, hydroxy, C1-8 alkyl or hydroxy -C1-8- alkyl; R3 is hydrogen or C1-8alkyl; R is hydroxy, hydroxy -C1-8- alkyl, benzyloxy, phosphate or carboxypropionyloxy; R5 is hydrogen, C1-8 alkyl or hydroxy -C1-8 alkyl; and physiologically acceptable esters of those compounds wherein R2 is hydroxy or hydroxy -C1-8- alkyl, R4 is hydroxy, hydroxy -C1-8- alkyl or carboxypropionyloxy or R5 is hydroxy -C1-8- alkyl; and physiologically acceptable salts of such compounds of formula (I) and their esters; the compounds whereln X is oxygen, R1 is amino, R2, R3 and R5 are each hydrogen and R4 is hydroxy, are provided; these compounds have valuable antiviral activity particularly against herpes virus. |
