PURPOSE:To improve weather resistance by copolymerizing a cationically polymerizable monomer component contg. isobutylene with a nonconjugated diene in the presence of a Lewis acid. CONSTITUTION:A cationically polymerizable monomer component contg. 50 wt.% or more isobutylene is copolymerized with a nonconjugated diene of formula I (wherein R<1>, R<2>, and R<3> are each H or 1-8C alkyl; R<7>, R<8>, and R<9> are each H, methyl, or ethyl; and Q is a 1-30C divalent org. group) in the presence of a Lewis acid and, when necessary, an initiating-chain transfer agent of formula II [wherein X is halogen, RCOO-, or RO-; R is a monovalent org. group; R<6> is a polyvalent arom. ring or a (substd.) polyvalent aliph. hydrocarbon group; and R<4> and R<5> are each H or a (substd.) monovalent hydrocarbon group provided that when R<6> is a polyvalent aliph. hydrocarbon group, R<4> and R<5> are not simultaneously H] at 10-80 deg.C for 0.5-120min to give the title polymer having at least one terminal unit of formula II (wherein R' and R'' are each R<7>) per molecule and a number-average mol.wt. of 500-500,000. |
