PURPOSE: To effectively feed the documents of a standard size and an oversize to different image pickup positions on an image pickup platen. CONSTITUTION: All the documents are first fed from a desirable feed-in position 25 for a standard document practically downstream from an upstream end 26a on the platen 30 to the platen. The sensed oversized document is fed to the downstream first, however, after the rear end is passed through the feed-in position, it is fed to a specified image pickup position partially overlapped with the upstream part of the platen not used normally toward the upstream end 26a of the platen. During the first movement in an opposite direction of the oversized document, at the feed-in position, the downstream end 26b of a buffle 26 is turned upwards and a document guiding surface under the buffle is prepared. The buffle is lowered on a part of the oversized document so as to prepare an image pickup background surface before the image pickup and then raised again for the discharge on a downstream side of the oversized document.
