A method of making electrodes for batteries comprises depositing a first layer of monovalent or divalent silver oxide electrode material upon a porous inert form (e.g. a filter paper which may be continuous) from a slurry of the silver oxide in an inert liquid (e.g. water) and withdrawing (e.g. by suction) the inert liquid during deposition, placing one side of a metal (e.g. nickel) grid on the first layer, depositing a second layer of silver oxide material on the other side of the metal grid from a slurry of silver oxide in an inert liquid and withdrawing the inert liquid during deposition, and drying the deposited layer, the amount of electrode material present in the slurry used in depositing the second layer being 2 1/2 -4 times the amount of electrode material present in the slurry used in depositing the first layer. The layers are compressed and the porous inert form removed from the structure. The pressed structure is heated to convert the oxide to silver and the structure may be converted into its active form by anodically forming the oxide in situ in the structure. |
