A composition comprises a binder containing sulphonium groups convertible to a solid water insoluble product by heating. Specified binders are heat polymerisable sulphonium ionic compounds, polymisc sulphonium ionic compounds and sulphonium salts of acids of the group consisting of heat polymerizable organic carboxylic acids, phosphonic acids and sulphonic acid and their polymers. In examples, the binder comprised (1) polyvinyl benzyldimethyl-sulphonium chloride prepared from dimethyl sulphide, chloromethylstyrene and water, (2) the poly-methacrylic acid salt with N benzyl di(beta-hydroxy ethyl sulphonium) bicarbonate, (3) the polyacrylic acid salt with trimethyl sulphonium hydroxide, (4) the polyacrylic acid salt, (5) the acrylic acid -40 butyl acrylate copolymer salt with tri(beta-hydroxy ethyl) sulphonium bicarbonate, (6) (a) the tri(beta-hydroxy ethyl) sulphonium salt of poly(or-vinyl benzene phosphonic acid, (7) the same salt of poly(or-vinyl toluene phosphonic acid and the tri methyl sulphonium salt of poly(or -vinyl benzene phosphonic acid. The compositions may be used to coat metal surfaces. |
