Haloarylamines are prepared by hydrogenating halonitroaromatic compounds in the presence of a nickel or rhodium catalyst activated by a catalyst promotor consisting of magnesium or calcium hydroxide, calcium or sodium carbonate, calcium or sodium acetate or mixtures thereof. The reaction may be carried out at from 20 to 100 DEG C. and at pressures up to 30 atmospheres in an inert solvent. The starting material may contain besides halo and nitro other substituents such as alkyl, phenly, substituted phenyl, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Lists of suitable reactants and of haloarylamines which may be prepared are given. In examples m-bromoaniline and 4-bromo-3-amino biphenyl are prepared using, as catalyst, Raney nickel or rhodium, both catalysts being supported on alumina and promoted by calcium hydroxide. |
