A cargo submarine for transporting liquid, grain or powder comprises a thin outer non- pressure hull 1 and a comparatively rigid inner pressure hull 2 extending longitudinally within it, the space between the hulls 1 and 2 forming non-pressure cargo holds 20 and when the cargo can be allowed to come into contact with the external water this is admitted through valves 35 to the inside of the holds 20 to ensure that the holds are completely filled and to balance the pressures inside and outside of the hull 1, but when the cargo must be kept separate from the external water the pressures are balanced by devices 26 which transmit the external water pressure to the inside of the hull 1. The valve 35 comprises a piston 40 which is moved by air pressure supplied through the pipe 41 against the spring 43 to close the member 39, release of the oil pressure allowing the spring to open the member 39. The device 26 comprises a cylinder 28 attached to the hull 1 having holes 27 and 29 and a piston 30 which is urged outwardly by a spring 31. A bellows 32 connects the piston 30 and the hull 1 to prevent the ingress of water. The pressure hull 2 comprises a mid-section 3 which houses the engine room and buoyancy control tank 10, an adjacent section 13 housing a control room 12 and pressure hold 15 and fore-and-aft sections 19 which house pressure holds for the adjustment of buoyancy. Bulkheads 23 and 33 define fore-and-aft trim tanks 24 and 34. The hull 2 is divided by bulkheads 22 which correspond in position with bulkheads 21 in the holds 20. Transverse balance tanks (not shown) are disposed each side of the engine room inside the section 3, connected together by a bottom water pipe and pump and a top air pipe and a main buoyancy tank 4 is disposed around the section 3. A sonar dome 25 is disposed in the bow.
