PURPOSE: To surely prevent the meandering of a handrail so as to prolong the life thereof by setting the swinging angles of drive rollers in both sides of the handrail equal to each other, and disposing the drive rollers always in opposing positions sandwiching the handrail. CONSTITUTION: Assuming that a handrail 18 travels from left to right in the drawing, rollers 8 and 10 are joined to the handrail 18 by specified fastening forces, and the inner races of bearings 26 and 30 are rotated in the directions of arrows A and B. At this time, the axes 13 and 15 of shafts 12 and 14 are swung by anglesσ1 andσ2 respectively with respect to the axes of bearings 27 and 35. When there is no connection to be made with a link 50, since the roller 10 is brought into contact with the high friction surface of the handrail 18 and the roller 8 is brought into contact with a low friction surface at the time of applying a high load, the angleσ1 is about 25 times larger than the angleσ2 . However, the anglesσ1 andσ2 are held roughly equal by the link 50. Thus, the rollers 8 and 10 are surely brought into contact with both sides of the handrail 18 in opposing positions.
