PURPOSE: To provide a compact optical switch module of excellent energy efficiency. CONSTITUTION: This switch module is provided with the thin film waveguide 22 of a nonlinear optical material, the array 14 of input optical fibers arrayed on one of the end edges and the array 16 of output fibers arrayed on a second end edge on a substrate. A film 26 including a grating pattern to be written inside a nonlinear medium as a hologram is positioned at the upper part of the waveguide and a space light beam modulator(SLM) 28 is positioned on it and irradiated from the upper part with coherent or non-coherent light beams 30. The hologram written in the nonlinear medium diffracts beams from the input to the output of the waveguide. Since the hologram is eliminated by uniform exposure from the lower part of the medium after being written in the nonlinear medium so as to perform light beam distribution from the input to the output, switching is performed by changing the masking pattern of the SLM and writing a new hologram to the nonlinear medium. |
