The invention relates to an electric furnace for production of a metal such as steel, comprising a tank (1) limited by a lateral wall (21) surrounding a bottom covered with a floor (2) made of refractory material forming a basin with raised edges, and closed by a removable cover which can be penetrated by at least one electrode, the whole being mounted in a pivoting manner on either side of a transverse median plane to allow the pouring out by overflowing of respectively the steel via a front orifice and the slag via a rear orifice which are each positioned above an overflow threshold (23). The rear part of the floor (20) covering the bottom is prolonged by an essentially vertical wall (24) made of refractory material which rises above the level of the overflow threshold (23), and the rear orifice (4) for discharging the slag is arranged over its entire height through said vertical wall (24) of the floor (20) and is associated with a removable shutting member (41) which is essentially impermeable to air and to liquid metal. <IMAGE>
