PURPOSE: To restore the high-frequency part of unscaled-down luminance signals with an economically excellent noise performance by extracting the high-fre quency part of the luminance signals at a scaled-down level from a medium and boosting the parts by a prescribed amount. CONSTITUTION: An adaptive de-emphasis circuit 10 variably scales down the level of the high-frequency part of video signals correspondingly to a control signal from a control signal generator 80 and a synthesizing circuit 30 synthesizes signals obtained by superimposing the scaled-down luminance signals from the circuit 10 upon the low-frequency part of the video signals at a folding circuit 20 with chrominance components from a terminal 25 and records the synthesized signal in a video cassette 40. In reproducing the luminance signals, a separation circuit 50 separates the chrominance components from the output signal of the cassette 40 and a reemphasis circuit 70 boosts the reproduced luminance signals by refolding the scaled-down high-frequency part superimposed upon the low-frequency part by means of an unfolding circuit 60. Therefore, the high-frequency part of the unscaled-down luminance signals can be restored economically with a simple circuit.
