The vehicle current path protection device (16) has a release element (16A) and a contact bridge, with operation of the release element (16A) via a logic signal (245) upon comparison of the operating current fed along the current path with a max. permissible reference value. This reference value is calculated from the current carrying capacity of the current path and the max. operating current requirement. The logic signal (245) is blocked over a time window sufficient for initial starting of the vehicle i.c. engine, indicated via a pair of signals received via control current paths.
