PURPOSE:To obtain the title poly-alpha-olefin by polymerizing an alpha-olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least two specified transition metal compounds and a promoter. CONSTITUTION:A process for producing a poly-alpha-olefin by polymerizing an alpha-olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least two transition metal compounds and a promoter, wherein at least a new transition metal compound of formula I and a transition metal compound of formula II are used as the transition metal compounds. In the formulas, A<1> is a cyclopentadienyl group or the like; A<2> is a fluorenyl group or the like; A<3> is a 4-20C hydrocarbondiylidene group; R<1> and R<2> are each a halogen, H, 1-10C alkyl or the like; M<1> is Ti, Zr or Hf; A<4> and A<5> are each H, 1-10C alkyl or the like; at least one of A<4> and A<5> is aryl or alkylaryl; Q is silicon carbide, Ge or Sn; and M<2> is Ti or Zr.
