A ferrite based manganese steel is composed of 0.003-0.1 wt.% carbon, 0.05-0.5 wt.% silicon, 8.0-14.0 wt.% manganese, 2.0-3.5 wt.% aluminum, 0.005-0.6 wt.% molybdenum, less than 0.02 wt.% phosphours, less than 0.1 wt.% sulphur, iron, and inevitable impurities. The manganese steel having a good toughness is prepared by (a) heating the hot rolled steel at Af (austenite forming finish temperatue) - 60 deg.C - Af and cooling in water, (b) reheating it at Af - Af + 60 deg.C and cooling in water, (c) tempering at As (austenite forming start temperature) - 100 deg.C - As to forming the residual austenite.
