The carcass quality and food conversion efficiency of animals is improved by treatment with an exogenous, homologous or synthetic growth hormone (I), or its analogues, derivs., fragments or salts. (I) is administered at a preselected liveweight and at a generally constant dose rate, depending on the species and sex of the animal. The pref. daily dosage is 0.01-0.15, esp. 0.06-0.15 mg/kg liveweight, esp. 0.06-0.1 mg/kg for females and castrated males and 0.1-0.15 mg/kg for entire males. Also administration of (I) at 0.06-0.15 mg/kg/day for 10-25 days before slaughter will reduce the fat content of the carcass.
