摘要 PURPOSE:To lower the sliding friction loss of an engine, by offsetting the axis of a crankshaft from the center of the cylinder at a particular rate of the stroke of a piston, and thereby reducing the side force produced during the expansion stroke. CONSTITUTION:An engine E1 is of the in-line, four-stroke cycle type having a plurality of cylinders 4 disposed in line along the axis of a crankshaft 1, and pistons 5 fitted in respective cylinders 4 in freely slidable manner are connected to respective crank pins 3 by connecting rods 6. Here, the axis of the crankshaft 1 is offset from the center lines of respective cylinders 4 in the direction of the side force R which is acted to urge the pistons 5 onto the inner surface of respective cylinders 4, and the rate of offset (a) is selected to be 10-40% of the piston stroke.
