2-alkylthio-benzole sulphonic acid chlorides (I) (which may be used as intermediates products in the synthesis of herbicidal active agents) may be produced in very good quantities and with a high degree of purity if 2-alkylthio-aniline (II) is caused to react as per (A) with aqueous solutions of alkaline metal nitrites (without the addition of acetic acid) at temperatures between -10 and +10 DEG C and then, possibly after the addition of an organic solvent, with sulphur dioxide in the presence of a copper catalyst at temperatures between -10 and +50 DEG C.
