A rotor 1 rotatably mounted in a housing 9 has a drive or driven shaft 2 projecting from the housing. A circumferential array of radial cylinders 3 contain free pistons 5. The pistons slidably engage an elliptical peripheral track 8 secured to the housing. Each piston 5 defines a variable-volume chamber 3a at the radially inner end of its associated cylinder 3, where the cylinder is provided with a port 4 communicating with inlet and exhaust ports 15, (16, Fig. 1) and associated channels in a central tube 14 fixed to the housing 9. <IMAGE>
