A process for the manufacture of filaments of high molecular weight synthetic linear polyamides containing at least 10% by weight of chalk uniformly dispersed therein, the chalk having an average particle size not greater than 5 microns, comprises dispersing the chalk in the molten polyamide at the end of or after the final stage of the polymerization cycle and forming the polyamide into filaments. Specified polyamides are polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polyaminoheptanoic acid and polyaminoundecanoic acid. The example describes the polymerization of e -caprolactam, the addition of the chalk and the formation of filaments.
