Inversion layer solar cell with MIS structure - has charge for inversion layer provided by transparent inorganic cover layer

The solar cell has a MIS semiconductor body comprising a substrate (2), an ohmic contact (3), an insulation layer (5) with a tunnel characteristic and a metal grid (4) applied to the insulation layer (5). The charges for obtaining an inversion layer (10) in the substrate (2) are provided via a transparent cover layer (6) of an inorganic electret material e.g. SiO2. The cover layer (6) may incorporate a positive or negative charge, with its surface pref. ridged, for improving its anti-reflection characteristics. Alternatively it carries a thin anti-reflective coating.
