Humectants are used in the production of foodstuffs and industrial products in order to prevent the products drying out, as well as in skin care compositions in order to keep the skin moist and supple. Natural moisture regulators are nowadays replaced in skin care compositions by synthetic humectants. A process for the production of a humectant which has a chemical structure similar to that of natural moisture regulators is proposed according to the invention. To do this, residual molasses from sugarbeet molasses are treated, and the organic acids present, especially L-2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid and lactic acid, are obtained. |
