In any picture element controlled with a scanning electrode Si, therefore, a discharge luminous waveform is, for example, as shown in the lowest line of the illustration. By performing the pre-discharge as aforementioned, it becomes possible to eliminate an error in suddenly lighting a picture element not lit for a long time.
