To improve the ductility and elastic limit of beryllium or beryllium alloysheets, tubes &c., the object is brought to a temperature close to but below the recrystallization temperature and subjected at that temperature to a permanent deformation which is insufficient to cause recrystallization for a period sufficient to ensure complete relief of the stress resulting from the deformation. The temperature range is approximately 550 DEG C to 650 DEG C. Deformation may be imparted by traction, compression, torsion or bending. In an example, a sheet brought to 600 DEG C. is subjected to a 0.2% deformation by traction for fifteen minutes. |
