Tetrafluoromethylene is separated from mixtures thereof with volatile non-perfluorinated fluorocarbons which, in addition to fluorine, contain at least one element selected from hydrogen, chlorine, bromine and iodine by adding to the mixture an alcohol or phenol, ether, ketone or ester of the general formulae R1OH, R2OR3, R4COR5 and R6CO.OR7, wherein R1 to R7 are saturated aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals, and which is liquid at the distillation conditions and then fractionally distilling the mixture. The distillation agents preferably contain 1 to 12 carbon atoms in their molecule and the mixture to be separated may be prepared by the pyrolysis of chlorodifluoromethane or of bromodifluoromethane or by inorganic and organic fluoride arc processes known to produce tetrafluoroethylene. |
