978,337. Load handling. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 19, 1962 [July 17, 1961], No. 12729/64. Divided out of 978,335. Heading B8H. A gripping mechanism, e.g. for coke oven lids 30, comprises a rotatable member 81, rockable jaws 94 carried thereby, a fixed, internally threaded sleeve 98 surrounding the member 81, and a cam-ring 101 which is externally threaded and engages the sleeve 98, whereby rotation of the member 81 rotates the ring 101 by frictional engagement therewith to cause axial movement of the ring 101 in the sleeve 98 to move the jaws 94 appropriately about pins 95. The member 81 has a recess 82 to accommodate a dome 80 on a projection 76, 77 on the cover 30, and a wrenchlike portion 83 which engages the sides of the projection 77 (see Fig. 4, not shown), so that rotation of the member 81 also serves to rotate the cover 30 for removal or replacing. The jaws 94 engage under the portion 77 and move in and out in openings 93a in a skirt 84 on the member 81. |
