Improvements in or relating to machines for removing and replacing covers on charging holes

A charging larry for a coke oven battery has an arm 35 which is both vertically movable and mounted for swinging about a vertical axis, the arm carrying mechanical gripping means 36 operative for gripping and releasing a charging hole cover 31, and control means 34 for swinging the arm 35 from one position to another, for raising and lowering the arm, and for actuating the means 36. The apparatus operates as follows: starting with the arm 35 in its rest position 35A, Fig. 8, and in its raised position 35R, Fig. 5, and with jaws 94 of gripping device 36 open, Fig. 11-An operator causes pressure fluid to be supplied to a cylinder 151, Fig. 8, to move a piston 152 and hence a member 110, which has raised end portions 112, 113 see Fig. 9, (not shown), leftwards. Rack 118 rotates shaft 141, gears 144, 145, Fig. 5, transmitting the movement to a shell 40 and to the arm 35 which moves over a charging hole 31, the portion 112 maintaining the arm 35 in its raised position through a linkage see Fig. 4, (not shown), extending from a roller 120 to a collar 135 secured by bolts 47 to a housing 39 vertically movable in the shell 40. Rotation of the arm 35 is arrested by engagement of a flat 150 on sprocket 141 with a smooth portion of member 110 and, as roller 120 moves down ramp 115, the arm 35 is lowered, through the linkage mentioned above, to the position 35L. This movement relative to a fixed stop 181 releases a rockable member 171 from plates 175, 177, to permit an arm 52 within the arm 35 freedom to adjust itself longitudinally and transversely to allow the gripping device 36 to centre over a cover 30, and engagement of a rack 117 on the member 110 with a pinion 137 rotates shaft 73, Fig. 5, through shaft 138, longitudinally extensive coupling sleeve 63, shafts 61, 56, hammer blow clutch 57a, 57b, and chain 71, to cause jaws 94, Fig. 11, to close beneath head 77 of cover 30. The jaws 94 are pivoted about pins 95 by a cam surface on a ring 101 which is vertically movable by rotation of the shaft 73 due to its screw-threaded engagement with a sleeve 98 fixed to the arm 35, as described in more detail in Specification 978,337. The cover 30 is rotated through 470 degrees until a flat 140 on the sprocket 137 engages a straight edge of member 110, thus locking the gripping device 36. The roller 120 now ascends a ramp 116, lifting the arm 35 and attached parts, to position 35R, at which point rack 119 engages pinion 141 further to swing the arm 35 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 8. The oven is now charged, a sleeve 27 being lowered for this purpose, and after retraction of the sleeve 27, member 110 is moved to the right in Fig. 8 to reverse the above described sequence of operations.
