A surgical dressing comprises a layer of absorbent material jointed by seams, rows of spaced stitching or points of attachment to at least one layer of artificial textile fabric having a smooth surface for contacting a wound, said seams, stitching or points of attachement being separated by intervals of 3 to 15 mm. The fabric is made of rayon and the absorbent material is surgical wool, cellulose wadding, viscose sponge, gauze or other textile material or absorbent rayon. The layers are secured together by one series or two intersecting series of parallel lines or at spaced points formed by stitching with cotton or rayon thread, gluing or welding.
